The wines of PGI Mount Athos express a landscape in which viticulture, monastic heritage and contemporary wine production meet. Traditional hand work remains important in many vineyards, while cultivation methods and certifications are specific to each producer.
The current PGI Mount Athos specification authorises sixteen wine-grape varieties: seven for white wines and nine for red wines. The profiles below present fourteen of them and describe commonly reported varietal tendencies; the expression of any wine also depends on site, vintage, viticulture and vinification.
The authorised varieties can produce still white, red and rosé wines, as well as the liqueur and sun-dried-wine categories defined in the specification. These legal categories should be distinguished from wine intended specifically for liturgical use.
