The Athos peninsula is the easternmost of Halkidiki’s three peninsulas. The Autonomous Monastic State occupies most of it, while the PGI Mount Athos production area also includes the neighbouring district of Ouranoupoli.
The viticultural setting
The official specification places PGI vineyards between 10 and 400 metres. It describes medium-textured soils, commonly sandy-clay to clay-sandy, while the wider peninsula includes metamorphic, crystalline and igneous formations. Wine style cannot be attributed to geology alone: variety, site, season and vineyard management also matter.
Environmental description
The monastic territory is characterised by steep coastal slopes, folded relief and the summit of Athos at 2,033 metres. Forests, cultivated clearings and monastic settlements form the cultural landscape recognised by UNESCO; the conditions of individual vineyards vary substantially by location.
The peninsula is simultaneously a natural landscape, a monastic territory and a place of cultivation. Each of these dimensions requires its own precise description.
